Video

It all started with a Lego set.

In the sixth grade, I went to a friends birthday party, and after cake and ice cream, we were shown a video my friend and his dad had put together. They had synced up Star Wars Lego characters to the sound of "The Empire Strike Back" - and needless to say, my 11 year old brain nearly exploded.

And so I followed suit for the next few years, staking my creative output with G.I. Joe characters, strewn pieces of styrofoam, and a friends digital video camera. High school came and we explored different techniques, filming styles, and special effects.

Once graduated from high school, I attended the Digital and Interactive Media Design course at NAIT. In my second year, I majored in Video and graduated in spring 2008.

I now work at a local independent newspaper, Vue Weekly, shooting live bands and filming small, interesting things around Edmonton.

Red Ram: "Few in Life"

Created: September 2008
Location: Edmonton, Alberta

My job with Vue Weekly brought me to do a video with a local band from Edmonton named Red Ram. This was shot at Edmontone Studio.

With help from Mike Siek, we shot this video using two DVX-100 cameras. It was edited with Final Cut Pro.

Garbage In...

Created: May 2008
Location: Edmonton, Alberta

By the virtues of serendipity, this short film was born.

For the past year, I've been itching to take a tour of the recycling facility in Edmonton, Alberta. Bringing this up to employees at Vue Weekly, the boss took note and happened to meet with an old friend who worked at Waste Management in the city.

It turned out that in a few months, Edmonton would be holding a film festival in honor of the twentieth anniversary of recycling in the city. Being just as eager and excited as we were, Vue Weekly was given access to all waste management had to offer.

I shot and edited the whole film, which ran to be 18 minutes long. On May 12th, it was shown at the Reel Waste Film Festival at Metro Cinema in Edmonton, Alberta.

Manraygun - "Here Lies Love"

Created: June 2008
Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Working with Vue Weekly, I've had the opportunity to shoot live bands in their studio and on location. For this project, we were filming the local band Manraygun inside a band members house.

This particular video gave me the chance to experiment with the footage we captured.

I mixed the original video of the band playing the song "Here Lies Love" but also took the B-roll footage that I had shot in between songs. I desaturated the in-between shots showing the band members natural mannerisms and movements, along with their curious dog walking the set.

Darren Frank and Collen Brown - "Show and Tell"

Created: June 2008
Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Inside the studio at Vue Weekly, we had local musicians Darren Frank and Colleen Brown come to play a set. This video was a multi-camera setup, using my own Panasonic DVX-100B camera, and a JVC handycam.

The audio was recorded by Mike Siek (also an employee of Vue Weekly) using eight channels of separate audio. This required me to sync up the audio to the video.

The Awaso Vision

Created: February 2008
Location: Edmonton, Alberta / Drayton Valley, Alberta

In January 2008, I was approached by members of St. Anthony's church in Drayton Valley to help with their international project. They were building a school in the town of Awaso in Ghana, Africa.

Their group had recorded several hours of footage with a handycam earlier that fall. Working closely with members that had gone to Africa, we compiled a 10-minute promotional video to stir interest in their project.

The video has been shown at schools and churches around DraytonValley. It will later be used around Alberta for fundraising.

Through the Messenger: Skateboard Video

Created: September 2007
Location: Edmonton, Alberta / Drayton Valley, Alberta

On a warm summers day, a few friends and I hauled out the skateboards and the cameras and shot this two minute video. The skateboarders, Adam Osbourne and Aaron Garand are in a local metal band called Through the Messenger.

Shot in DV using NAIT's Panasonic HVX-200 camera, this could arguably be my first extreme sport video. Edited using Final Cut Pro, I intentionally tried to sync up actions from the skateboards to the music.
